OLDHAM-FLEX couplings use a radially moving disc to compensate for large misalignment errors between two shafts. The drums are made of hardened aluminium alloy, while the discs are made from acetal with excellent mechanical properties and low friction coefficient.
The coupling may show free-play above 10⁷ revolutions due to wear, which can be corrected by replacing the disc. The discs can be installed and replaced without disassembling the machines.
Radical misalignment doesn't cause significant kinematic errors in transmission, but angular misalignment can lead to small errors. These couplings are suitable for positioning shaft slow drives, spindles, and valves but should not be used with cantilever or paired shafts.
